How to Write a Focus Group Screener
A focus group screener is a brief survey that specifies characteristics of the people you want to interview and study.
You use a screener to recruit and select respondents for focus groups or depth interviews.

Respondents You Want
So whom do you talk to? There are six categories:
- Customers
- Category users who use competitors’ products
- Prospects
- Experts
- Channel personnel - distributors, dealers, retailers
- Internal management
Customers have direct experience with your product. They speak about their attitudes and behaviors about your product or service.
Category users buy and use your competitors’ products, not yours. You want to know why.
Prospects are ready to try the product category. What will it take to get them to buy and use your product?
Experts spend much time focused on a topic or industry. Talk to them. They give expert opinions, judgments, and advice. They are trade magazine editors, authors, journalists, consultants, industry analysts, financial analysts, trade association executives, professors, professionals, and industry executives.
Channel personnel are people who work among distributors, dealers, or retailers. They sell the products in the category or service them. People you want to talk to are typically owners, executives, managers, salespeople, account managers, and service technicians. You want to know what products channel personnel recommend to end users and why.
Management includes internal executives, managers, and people from relevant departments. Five to ten depth interviews with internal management are worthwhile and often revealing.
Aim to benchmark management’s knowledge and views about a topic. Compare management’s internal thinking to external thinking. Look for ways to supplement their information and knowledge. Fill the gap in knowledge.
Respondents You Don’t Want
You don’t want people without product category experience. At best, they supply vague opinions, which may be irrelevant.
But there is an exception. Prospects who don’t have category experience but are ready to try the category are worth interviewing. Beyond compare 4 3 3 cylinder.
You don’t want respondents with atypical knowledge or experience who are not representative of segments of interest. They have following characteristics:
- consumers who work in the industry you’re studying
- people who work in ad agencies and marketing research firms
- professional respondents
Professional respondents are people who attend focus groups or take interviews to make money. Cash incentives and prizes are the attraction; it is a part-time job for them. Unfortunately, professional respondents are widespread in consumer research.
Professional respondents are a waste of time and money. They provide useless babble and bias the sample. Screen them out, if you can, using your focus group screener.
Recruiters should be able to spot professional respondents. Recruiters keep databases about respondents and these recruiters should be able to check the number of times respondents have previously joined in interviews, using their database. Competent recruiters check proof of respondent identification, usually a driver license.
Work with professional recruiters to weed out professional respondents. Tell your recruiter that professional respondents are unacceptable. Warn your recruiter, if he or she tries to pass on professional respondents.
Use your focus group screener to select the right respondents.
The wrong respondents are a waste of time and money and are misleading.

Windows Spotlight is an option for the lock screen background that displays different background images and occasionally offers suggestions on the lock screen. Windows Spotlight is available in all desktop editions of Windows 10.

For managed devices running Windows 10 Enterprise and Windows 10 Education, enterprise administrators can configure a mobile device management (MDM) or Group Policy setting to prevent users from using the Windows Spotlight background. For managed devices running Windows 10 Pro, version 1607, administrators can disable suggestions for third party apps.
Note
In Windows 10, version 1607, the lock screen background does not display if you disable the Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing setting in This PC > Properties > Advanced system settings > Performance settings > Visual Effects, or if you enable the Group Policy setting Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Desktop Windows Manager > Do not allow windows animations.
In Windows 10, version 1703, you can use the Personalization CSP settings to set lock screen and desktop background images.
What does Windows Spotlight include?
- Background imageThe Windows Spotlight displays a new image on the lock screen each day. The initial background image is included during installation. Additional images are downloaded on ongoing basis.
- Feature suggestions, fun facts, tipsThe lock screen background will occasionally make recommendations on how to enhance your productivity and enjoyment of Microsoft products including suggesting other relevant Microsoft products and services.
How do you turn off Windows Spotlight locally?
To turn off Windows Spotlight locally, go to Settings > Personalization > Lock screen > Background > Windows spotlight > select a different lock screen background
How do you disable Windows Spotlight for managed devices?
Windows Spotlight is enabled by default. Windows 10 provides Group Policy and mobile device management (MDM) settings to help you manage Windows Spotlight on enterprise computers.

In addition to the specific policy settings for Windows Spotlight, administrators can replace Windows Spotlight with a selected image using the Group Policy setting Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel > Personalization > Force a specific default lock screen image Tipard dvd ripper for mac 9 2 2020. Pay attention to the checkbox in Options. In addition to providing the path to the lock screen image, administrators can choose to allow or Turn off fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on lock screen. If the checkbox is not selected, users will see the lock screen image that is defined in the policy setting, and will also see occasional messages.
Resolution for custom lock screen image
A concern with custom lock screen images is how they will appear on different screen sizes and resolutions.
A custom lock screen image created in 16:9 aspect ratio (1600x900) will scale properly on devices using a 16:9 resolution, such as 1280x720 or 1920x1080. On devices using other aspect ratios, such as 4:3 (1024x768) or 16:10 (1280x800), height scales correctly and width is cropped to a size equal to the aspect ratio. The image will remain centered on the screen
Lock screen images created at other aspect ratios may scale and center unpredictably on your device when changing aspect ratios.

The recommendation for custom lock screen images that include text (such as a legal statement) is to create the lock screen image in 16:9 resolution with text contained in the 4:3 region, allowing the text to remain visible at any aspect ratio.
